In addition to the frequently asked questions, please view the maintenance videos below.
How often should I maintain my SideStix moving parts?
The damping shock absorber is made from self-lubricating components. Because of this, additional lubrication is generally not required. Should the shock absorber become submerged in water, or sand/grit etc. we recommend that the assembly be dismantled and wiped out with a clean, dry cloth. Once reassembled, the shock absorber should slide smoothly. A light application of WD40 may be applied to sliding surfaces – if desired.
The Articulating/Rotating Feet need periodically maintenance to ensure best performance. This generally involves cleaning, replacing worn o-rings and lubrication every 2-4 months depending on use.
The movements of the Articulating/Rotating Feet are not as smooth as I expected. Can I do anything about this?
Yes. This is a sure sign that the rotating feet require maintenance. Following the instructions on the maintenance video, clean, replace o-rings and apply lube as required.
What type of lubrication should I use?
We recommend that clear grease such as Super Lube be included in your maintenance kit, but if you are in a pinch our users have even used olive oil or cooking spray!
Do I need to carry my hex key and SideStix tool everywhere I go?
No, however, we recommend you have your tools for long walks, hikes, or if you anticipate removing tips or attachments.
Should the bolts be greased?
No. Your bolts will function best if they are not greased.
Is there a specific tightness measurement for SideStix bolts?
The torque value for the c-clamp bolts is 9NM. However since most people don’t carry a torque wrench around, the best way to correctly tighten the bolts is to gently tighten them till they are snug and then add a ¼ turn. This will ensure that the clamps are tight – whilst preventing over-tightening, which can lead to a broken bolt!
There is some ‘stiction’ of shock mechanism, can this be fixed?
This is probably a result of some contamination in the shock assembly. We recommend that the assembly be dismantled and wiped out with a clean, dry cloth. Once reassembled, the shock absorber should slide smoothly. A light application of WD40 may be applied to sliding surfaces – if desired.
The cuff opening is too big/too small, can I adjust this?
Absolutely! The cuff is made of Zytel™ and can be heated and moulded. Please refer to the instructional video below that covers this subject.
The Vibram sole has fallen off my tip! What do I do?
Hopefully you have discovered this immediately and have the sole. Just use contact cement, or superglue to secure it back on. Shoe repair shops will also reattach the tip soles for a nominal fee – or can re-sole the tips if required.
Can I change my handles?
Yes, we have used an Ergon bike grip, but our handle can accommodate any bike or crutch grip. If you require help installing or adjusting your handle, your bike or hardware store can provide assistance.
